Karen’s extra day in Urumqi

This is the story of Annette, Graham and I’s small but exciting trip to a different area in China. Our journey started by spending an extra day in Urumqi.
Urumqi has a rich, multi-ethnic population of over 4 million. It is home to more than 40 ethnic groups, most notably the Uyghur, Han, Kazakh and Hui people. It is the capital of Xinjiang.
Our first stop was the Xinjiang Ancient Ecological Park (also known as the Xinjiang Khan Blood Horse Base). It is a 300 acre attraction in Urumqi’s Xinshi District. It is famous for breeding rare Akhal-Teke horses and it is a space for equestrian events and for breeding and training horses. The Park houses more than 400 Akhal-Teke horses and 18 renowned European and Asian horse breeds.
We were lucky enough to see an equestrian performance there.
